Central London Ontario homes for sale
Central London district or “Downtown London” is bounded by Oxford St. in the north, the Thames River to the south and west and Adelaide St. to the east. It contains London’s central business district containing all of the large commercial highrises and many apartment towers. Central London serves as the hub of London’s land transportation system with the Via Rail and Greyhound Stations and as the main transfer terminal for the London Transit Commission at Dundas St. and Richmond St.
Dundas St. has been known as London’s “main street” since the city’s founding. There are many heritage attractions remaining from this era including including Eldon House and the Middlesex County Building (Old Courthouse) as well as cultural and commercial landmarks.
It was the main shopping destination until the late 1980s and early 1990s when the area started to experience a decline as suburban malls began to attract more shoppers. Since then, the City of London has initiated many projects to revitalize the area such as the renovation of the Covent Garden Market, the relocation of the London Public Library and the building of the Budweiser Gardens arena in the old Talbot Block location. London’s historic downtown is in the midst of a significant renaissance with many new restaurants, retail outlets and significant residential developments happening here. Almost 12,000 people lived in Central London in 2006 and this number is expected to show improvement as the next census numbers are released. The Talbot, Midtown/Beal, Piccadilly, Woodfield (which includes the East Woodfield Heritage Conservation District), SOHO and Richmond Row (shopping area) areas are all smaller neighbourhoods or shopping areas located in Central London.
Schools located in this area include: Beal Secondary School, Central Secondary School, Catholic Central Secondary School, Aberdeen Public School, Lord Roberts Public School, St. John Separate School, St. Joseph Immersion Separate School
